I have an 84' Proline with Johnson 90 hp OB.

It ran fine all summer until I was cruising along and the boat began to bog down. I noticed what looks like dirt in the fuel filter. I flushed all of the gas out but the filter still has these particles in it. a friend said that I need to "steam clean the tank or have it cleaned" The only access to the tank is through small hole in the floor. I have a steel tank and do not know what to do short off cutting a hole in the floor to pull the tank. any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

If you're leaking gas the tank MUST be replaced, no questions. Sounds like you have rust forming in the tank, still not good. As a stop gap measure, I might consider putting in a remote filter; like Fram or Racor. This should catch most of the stuff. Check it often. I'm surprised that you have gotten that many years on a steel tank. :(

Re: Flakes in the Gas Tank! Help

When I had water issues because of badly routed vent lines, I built my own Fuel Polishing System....
Fuel line out of the tank, goes to a seperator/filter, to an ele. fuelpump.. then a long line back to the fuel fill....
Start the pump, run for several hours, all the while raising,+ lowering the trailer jack.. you could also tip it left, to right....
When all is said + done, you have One(1) Very dirty filter, rather than several junk filters...And Very Clean Gas.....
Of course, this will not stop more rust from forming, the Only cure for that is Tank replacement.... Adding an Extra filter May make it liveable, But, Tank replacement is the Ultimate Answer...
