I'm getting close to having the boat running. :D But it just wouldn't start for me tonight, and I ran out of daylight. When I started the boat, the engine turned over, sputtered, and backfired flames out the carb. Gas was fresh.

Here's what I've got:
1979 - Mercruiser 470
Alternator conversion (one wire alternator with alternator wire to + on battery)
Petronix Flamethrower Electronic Ignition (Switched at key)
Electric Fuel Pump (Switched at key).
Spark Plugs (Gapped to .040, too much?)

My battery may have also been a little low. It was enough to crank the engine over, but I was getting a bouncy reading at the coil of 8~8.9v. I assumed that it was because the electric fuel pump is connected to the key along with the coil. Maybe this causes problems.

Anyway, could someone give me a couple things to try to get the boat running.

check the timing, sounds like it is late, try turning the distributor a little at a time until it starts then check it with a light, good luck

timing... do you have a timing light as it helps much more than expected
