I've got a ringing sound whenever I rev up my 87 3.0 mercruiser and I'm wondering if it could be the exhaust flapper. I've considered the coupler but I've heard it's usually a popping sound.

The exhaust shutters make a ticking sound at idle, never hear them at higher rpm.
Couplers don't make popping sounds either.
Not sure who you have been talking to about these sounds, but I would stop if I were you.

Don ... I've got to pull the engine out to replace the exhaust gasket under the engine ... how can I check the coupler while I've got it out? It's kind of like a "ringing " sound.

About the only thing you can do is look at the splines to see that they are not worn to a sharp point, and make sure the rubber is in good shape.
Like I said before, couplers don't make noise. You could be hearing the gimbal bearing or ujoints makeing noise, who knows. But it's not that coupler.
