Has anyone here experiemented with flashlight mods? For example, replacing incandescent bulbs with LED's and the like. Not factory sold kits, but homebuilt stuff?

I want to convert some minimag 2AA lights to obtain better performance, instead of buying a surefire or two.

I also saw this and it made me want to plug in the soldering iron: http://www.flashlightreviews.com/mods/9v_mod.htm

Thanks for your thoughts !

Re: Flashlight modification

I've made several of them. My flashlight collection is close to becoming worth more than my boat. :D Usually I use a 3 watt Luxeon Star LED. You can get them for about $15 each. To use them in a 2AA minimag you would need a step up converter, there are lots of places that sell drivers for LEDs or you could make your own. For a minimag, you would probably want to buy an LED drop in already made, there's so little room to work with in there you'd never fit everything unless you're REALLY good with electronics. There are several minimag LEDs for around $30.

Re: Flashlight modification

I kind of have a flash light fetish,I have to look at all the new lights and fondle them in the store. That being said, that looks kinda neat. Might have to go get some parts.Although,(I have LIMITED knowledge of electronics, enough to be dangerous)I think that there should be a resistor in series wiht the leds.I tried hooking them up before without a resistor and they make a nice little pop, then smoke, then stink up the garage! :D

Re: Flashlight modification

There seems to be a great disparity in battery life with LED's. I saw a battery life chart once that showed a precipitous drop off in performance as a short time had elapsed compared to alkalines. In other cases LED's seem to go on forever. Me thinks that better ones must have some kind of electronic 'regulator' that evens out the consumption.

Generally with high power LED lights you only get full output for a few hours, about the same as a bulb, but then as the batteries run out you can get dim light for many more hours, even weeks. Most of the manufacturers include this dim light in their run time numbers.

Re: Flashlight modification

One of my flashlights came with a halogen bulb, another with a krypton bulb. What's the difference between these and standard incandescents? I'm sure either of these would be a "drop-in" replacement and both claim to be whiter and brighter. Edit: I don't think either of these bulbs would fit in a AA minimag.

ZmOz, is the conversion worth spending $30 upgrading an $8 flashlight?

Depends. You could get a 1 watt LED and get slightly brighter, much whiter light that never burns out. The battery life would be slighly less than with the stock bulb. Or you could get a 3 watt LED, which is quite a bit brighter, but you'd only get an hour or two of battery life. Also remember that any LED light doesn't throw the light as far, they're more flood.

As far as you're concerned, I think you'd be happier with a pre made $30-50 LED light. Inova makes some pretty good quality and reasonably priced lights with Luxeon Stars in them. Don't go for any of the no name chinese lights on ebay...they're all total crap.

If you still want to modify an existing light, a larger D or C cell Maglite would be a much better starting point. Alot more battery life and room to put electronics. I have a 3D Mag that I put rechargeable lithium ion batteries in, and a 5 watt LED. LONG run time...TONS of white light, and I can whack someone with it if I need to. :D It did cost about $120 to make though. Right now I'm in the process of putting an HID light into a 5D Mag.

Here is a pretty good page about modifying a larger Mag. If you go to flashlightlens.com you can buy an "O-sink" for $16, this is the heat sink you need to mount the LED on. Then you need to buy a 1, 3, or 5 watt Luxeon emitter, install it on the heat sink and wire it up. You will need either a resistor with a 3+ cell light, which will give you bright light at first slowly dimming over the life of the batteries (like a normal bulb) or some kind of driver circuit on a 2+ cell light. A driver circuit will increase/lower the voltage as necessary, giving you longer battery life and even light over the life of the batteries.

Re: Flashlight modification

I also have a flashlight fetish, it's become a bit of a problem. I am facinated by the semi-expensive ones (I have a Stinger XT HP, streamlight vulcan, etc.).

It is good to know that I am not the only darkness challenged individual out there.

Yeah, where does it stop. I need professional help. Screwdriver combos, knives, flashlights. I'm drowning. Please help me! :D

Re: Flashlight modification

You know you have a problem when you start buying things like this and this like I have. :D I can't tell you how many times I've heard "why do you need another flashlight?". I think it all stems from when I was stuck a mile and a half into a cave without a light...

At least we don't go around filling everything up with Amsoil. :p (Oh wait, I have that problem too  )

Re: Flashlight modification

I think I will just stick with my Super Sabrelite Submersible. Takes 3 "C" cells which seem to last a longgggg time, almost unbeatable brightness for its size, practically indestructible, and as its name says, completely submersible.....can even use it underwater (for when you sink your boat???LOL) Lots of divers use them too. Has a handy nylon strap plus a strong clip for attaching it to whatever you need to. And another plus, it is explosive proof which means you won't have any problem using it when filling or overfilling your gas tank in the dark. ;) I never leave home without one....in the truck, boat, etc. Heartily recommend one if you need a standard sized flashlight.

Re: Flashlight modification

I want one of the small ones most of the police officers carry. I think they are the Stingers and man they work great. I have one of the streamlight mini LED lights that takes AAAA batteries in blue that I use for checking A/C dye leaks and it works great. 2 years and going strong on the batteries.

Re: Flashlight modification

Just sold a Streamlight Stinger XT HP rechargeable with AC charger and extra battery on ebay. They are great, but the light bezel is large and it does not carry well. I am awaiting the arrival of the Surefire E2E, and we'll see how that one does.
