fleetwin starter rope

hey guys i have a 54 7.5 fleetwin model 7514. the motor runs great but i cant keep the starter rope on. i have tried every knot i can think of and nothing seems to work. it will stay on for a day or a week but always comes loose. also i have a rattle when run with cowl on and have added bumpers of one sort or another everywhere but cant seem to get rid of it. it purrs like a kitten without the cowl

I'm not totally sure, but didn't a 1954 have some sort of rope anchor in there besides a knot?

The rewind rope had a wire core rope with an anchor soldered on the end of it to go in the pulley. Probably NLA. There were some nylon ropes out there that had the anchor on the end but they may also be NLA.
