I just put a new impeller in a 84 jonny 15 about 3 months ago, and this weekend noticed the forward drain hole was clogged. so I dropped the lower unit unclogged the fwrd drain compartment while doing so I noticed a small chunk of ?? in the waterpump up-spout so I removed pump cover and inspected all looked fine, the impeller was fine but did already seem to have a bit of direction rotation memory, so the question I have is should I flip the impeller over to counter the memory? it looks the same on both sides, I think its less than 3 months old, the chunk in the up-spout must have been from the original impeller change as that one had 2 broken fins I must have missed it first time around. So would it help / hurt to flip it? thanks' kb

Hey kodibass, what did you find out about the water leaking into the cylinder?

Zephyr, It turned out to be the exhaust port cover gasket, it was badly corroded and had a 1/4" long tear where the water was getting through, this engine has been a pain, Oh yea to get this cover off I had to pull the power head, the upper water tube grommet was torn in 2 chunks. So after dropping the lower unit twice, new impeller, pulling the power head, exhaust port gaskets & covers, bypass covers & gaskets, upper grommet replacement, a new head gasket, it now pee pee's, I just finished my 1962 rude 5 1/2 looks good and runs great, I also am about to finished a 1968 3 hp rude folder just a great running neat little motor, I'll post photos soon with details of what was done to each. then I have to decide which to do after that, I have a fantastic 1957 Jonny 5 1/2 that needs rings but I'm a bit nervous as I have never done a complete re-ring / rebuild. working up the guts! thanks kb

Do not flip...spend the $15 for a new one. Flipping the impeller would be like asking an 80 year old man to do a back flip...just ain't gonna happen without a major disaster! Those vanes have taken a set in one direction, and asking then to go in the other direction will rip them apart.

Well, this new impeller is only 3 months old. It's still new enough to put back into service. But this is a good future note though. Flipping the impellers is not a good idea.

I wont be taking any shortcuts on our boat ever again. I wouldnt reuse that if I were you. Just spend the 15-20 bucks to get a new one. No sense in flipping it then being worried that it is going to fall apart and fail. Then you could possibly have a whole 'nother set of problems to deal with on your hands than just a cheap impeller :)

A three month old impeller isn't likely to fail, that I have ever heard, or seen. Heck, that's barely even broke in. The pieces you're finging, are likely from the the 3 year old impeller that came apart before. ;)

Yea, I figured that it was the inner exhaust plate that was giving you the water in the cylinder, kodibass. Glad you got that fixed.

Thanks all, I have 2 more brand new impellers on hand, but I'm gonna reuse the 3 month old one, I put it back in the way it came out, it pumps just fine. I was just wondering if I "should" flip it as it is still very flexible and thought it mite kinda be a good thing, Kinda like rotating your tires,,, silly me.. its tuff being a simpleton! thanks kb

I don't think simpleton applies. The tires idea shows thought. But the other thought is that the rubber has "learned", and if you flip it it must "learn" all over again in the opposite direction. That means it must stretch where it used to be compressed, etc. You bend a piece of metal back and forth like that, and it will break.
