I have a flo torq propeller that I need to remove (a couple relatively minor chips that I need to get repaired). I've gotten off the prop nut and tab washer, but the prop does not want to come off. I don't believe that there are any other retaining devices in the aft adaptor. Other background information that may / may not help with my request ... I've got an Alpha drive, use the boat in salt water, prop was stored on boat, outside over the winter in New England. Thanks !!

Re: Flo Torq Prop Removal

Kookaburra, It sounds like corrosion is holding the prop on. If the nut and tab washer is off, the prop should be removeable. Try some penetrating oil and tap gently on the forward side of the prop blades and hub to assist in loosening it. Also, maybe a 2X4 can be used as a lever to push the prop off. If this fails, use a puller that hooks onto the blades. If that fails try a little heat on the bronze hub - try not to melt the rubber hub around it(maybe in conjunction with the puller). If that fails, you will need to chistle off the bronze hub of the prop. To do this you will need to destroy the aluminum blades and the rest of the casting, cut/burn off the rubber hub and the cut or crack the bronze core. If you are careful, you shouldn't damage the stainless propshaft splines. Lets hope that the last step is unnecessary.

hello
the flo-torque is a plastic hub. if its stuck you can try heating it. that is why grease is so important. I bet I cut 10 volvo props off every spring. not so many merc props as years past and never a flo torque. but sometimes I do have to use force to remove them

Rodbolt,

The Flo-torque II has a plastic hub, the Flo-torque is the older rubber one. Flo-torque II started around 1996ish....

Chris.......

Re: Flo Torq Prop Removal

Thanks to all for input. I'll keep the grease comment in mind when I put the next one on (if I get this one off)...I have a bit of pride in that this prop was on the boat when I bought it (that said, I guess I need to keep the maintenance up a bit better). Thanks again, your input is much appreciated!!
