My boat has a 1987 88 H.P. Johnson motor. While on the lake Sunday, I hit something in the water. The water level was coming up and there was a bit of junk around, so I wasn't going very fast. The boat will move in forward and reverse, so long as I don't go above approx. 10 % throttle. More than that and the rpm's climb but I don't go any faster. The stainless steel prop appears to be OK. All thoughts and suggestions will be appreciated.

The prop may not be damaged, but it really sounds like you have spun the hub..

if you take the prop off, and look in the exhaust outlet, you will see a rubber sleeve between the hub and the prop body.. if that rubber gives out, the hub can spin without the prop under load..

the symptoms would be as you describe..

take it off and have a look.. (sometimes it can be hard to tell, but if you can't go over 10% throttle it'd probably be obvious.

regards

Frank

I agree with Frank. Your motor has no sheer pin but the rubber hub is designed to slip if you hit something to save the gear box and drive shafts. One thing for sure if that the problem and you run where it slips it will get worse real fast. With the motor off and in gear see if you can turn the Prop. If you can and the motor did not turn that is the problem. You can have a new hub installed much cheaper than a new prop so if it is one you like check the phone book or call some dealers to find where to take it.

All the above is correct, the prop was designed this way to prevent damage to the prop shaft.
Take the prop to a repair shop and you should be back on the water in no time for under $100.
