Hi, I wasn't sure what forum to post this to so the general seemed good.
I need a recomendation for plywood that will float. Here is what I want to do. 35+ years ago my father cut a circle out of a piece of plywood, the exact diameter and thickness I can't recall. He had a 14' open boat with a 25 HP evinrude on it and after painting up this disc we used to get pulled behind the boat. It was a meager beginning to the next step of skiing but we could stand up at trolling speeds. In my boating heyday in the mid to late 90's we still used this disc when we got tired of the kneeboards, skis and wakeboards. It was always good for a laugh and very easy for beginners of all ages to get on the water and have some wet fun. Recently I have been getting back into water sports and besides being extra sore the next day it is like I never took a break from it. However some of my newbie 40 something friends have never been on skiis etc... and are not very coordinated. I thought the old disc that has always been stored in my uncles barn at the lake would be good fun for them BUT my uncle threw it out when he cleaned the barn out recently.
Lotta fun time history on that board and sad to see it go.
I want to make a new one. So what type of plywood should I use? I was thinking 5/8 and paint it to seal it. 1/2 might be too thin. With decades of use and sitting around the old one never warped or split.
What should I make this disc out of?

All kiln dried plywood will float, you want an exterior grade with the waterproof glue.

Pressure treated plywood will be soaking wet and won't float well nor will paint stay on it.

If you get one built and use it just watch out when the disk goes under straight in because it will shoot back out at the same speed it went in!

Thanks for the quick responses guys.
I can't believe they are making these discs commercially. I thought that video was a joke but watching it brought back memories and now I need to get building ASAP. It sounds like a BC or AC plywood at least 1/2 thick will work. We had a smaller disc painted up like a 8 ball and the bigger was a large daisy. Hey it was the 70's.
I do remember how the disc would submarine and do like a zig zag under the water then shoot out and WATCH OUT!
I'm excited now.

Ayuh,... The 1st disc I made was marked with a lumber crayon, 'n string to full width of a 3/4" sheet of plywood,...
BC probably...
I cut it out with a Chainsaw, 'cause it was handy,...
Sanded the edges abit, 'n We were in business...

It lasted a long time, 'n lookin' back, the improvements, Weren't,....
After it got painted, 'n outdoor carpet on 1 side, it was HEAVY, especially tryin' to get it back into a 14' Duo...
(paint is Slippery, carpet fixed that  )

Don't remember whatever happened to it,... We used it for years,...
I've got paper pictures of myself discin' 'round Lake Bonaparte, sittin' on my wooden chair, sippin' a brew....
That was all back in the Early 80s, through the 80s....

'bout 6/8 or so years ago, this topic came up, sittin' 'round the campfire with my Love's 2 teenagers,...
Soooo,....
Next day, Bondo is cuttin' a disc outa a nice sheet of 5 ply, 5/8" plywood, 'n not with a chainsaw this time....
After a good sandin' with 180gr,... it was Ready,..

Next weekend,... in Chaumont Bay,... I explained the process, 'n How to get up, 'n stay up...
1st in was Holley, 14 years old, 'n Determined,...
After 'bout 15 or 20 attempts, she admits defeat, 'n says she can't drink anymore of the pond...

16 year old, Big Bro, Owen jumps in, 'n We're off again,....
Up, 'n down,... Up, 'n down,... Up, 'n down,...
Up, 'n down,... Up, 'n down,... Up, 'n down,... Up, 'n down,... Up, 'n down,...
Eventually,......... Owen gives up, 'n crawls in over the transom,.....

'course, now the 2 of 'em are claimin' it can't be done, 'n I've been stringin' 'em along, beatin' 'em up on the rope....
My Love, Deb is just sittin' there, Grinnin', full ear to ear,...
Soooo,.....
In true Bondo fashion,... I ditched my dry stuff, threw on a pfd, 'n dove in,....
After treadin' water for awhile, explainin' to My Love, Deb, how to drive the boat, 'n especially with a tow-toy,...
She fired up the tinbarge, 'n brought 'round the towrope,....

As I got the feel for somethin' I haven't done in, ohhh, 30 Years,....
I nodded my head, 'n yelled, "Hit it"....

I Swear, in the 4' distance that disc is around,....
I was standin' up, like I'd done the chair, 'n a beer trick the day before,....

Just like runnin' a bike,... If ya Got It, it's There... rusty maybe, but There...

Anyways,...
The rest of the afternoon, 'n 20 gallons of gas later, both of the kids could say they knew how to do it....

The disc still sits in the houseboat, though it ain't been used in a couple years, it's none the worse, for wear, 'n tear, 'n is still bare wood...
I don't see any reason to ruin this 1 by improvin' it,...
The grandkids will be 'bout ready in another couple years.....

My only tip for buildin' 1 is, More plys the Better,... I think it keeps it from warpin'....
'n just sanded wood is best for hands, 'n feet....;)
