what do u do when u flood ur engine?i bellieve i flooded it by over pumping my bulb and messing with the choke and throttle. it was bad enough that i could see gas dripping at the carb. i cleaned it up and drained the carb. it started after that and i did not see any more gas leaking. it is a 9.8 4 stroke tohatsu. what is the correct procedure if u flood ur engine? i do run it dry after every use, i usually use it once a week. as always any advice is greatly appreciated. thanks

Re: flooded engine

The 9.8 does not have an accelerator pump, so pumping the throttle should not cause flooding. Likewise, the primer bulb only pressurizes the fuel line, and fills the carb until the needle closes. So neither of those things should cause flooding (unless the needle stuck, in which case pumping the primer could cause fuel to overflow). But in that case, the fuel pump would also cause it to overflow.

Now then, if you close the choke, the vacuum of cranking does pull extra fuel through the carb, and if you did that a lot, you could have liquid dripping at the carb. If you do that to the extreme, you get wet plugs, and they will not fire until they are dried. If that were the case, I would swap in my spare set of plugs, and allow the wet ones to dry.

So, if you just choked a little too much, wiping up the fuel (as you did) should be adequate. Just don't choke too much in the future.

Re: flooded engine

Prime engine, place throttle grip to start position, pull choke, pull cord vigorously max twice, if engine doesn't start, close choke, keep pulling rope till starts. Just in case, always carry a a lighter, matches, plug wrench along with you, remove wet plugs and light both electrodes singing along "Happy Birthday Plug" heated plugs shoud take care of a flooded engine inmediately.
