flooding out carb

i recently bout a boat with a volvo 280 leg and a 5.7 liter inboard. i took it out and it ran great. starts good to.
when i got home i tried to fire it up on the garden hose to flush it and it wouldnt start. i finally got it running but it doesnt like to idle at low rpm's.(stalls).
it seems like it was getting not enough fuel. i started to pump the throttle a few times before it would start and then would have to feather the throttle to get it up to a high enough rpm to stay running. about 1500-2000rpm.

i then unhooked the fuel lines from the mechanical pump and hooked up a temp electric pump and jerry can to the carb. it fired up but then fuel was pumping out the top of the carb through wat looks to be an overflow.
i then hooked the mechanical pump back up and it now does the same thing.

the gas is being pumped out a verticle tube at the top of the carb. it is a carter 2 barrrel carb.

could i have pumped too much pressure with the electric pump and unseated or jammed the floats.

any sugestions are appreciated.

Re: flooding out carb

Some debris could have been introduced into the carb, and lodged betwen needle and seat. Time for a carb look-see and refresh.

Re: flooding out carb

ya thats what i was thinking of doing. maybe buy a carb kit and a good cleening. maybe when i added the elecric pump some dirt was forced into the float valve jet.
thanks for the reply.

Re: flooding out carb

2 different boats. just got the volvo and it ran perfect for my ocean trip and just had issues with it when i got back to the driveway. it has a 2 bbl carter carb.
the merc has 4bbl rochester.
ya it sucks to have both not running right.

Re: flooding out carb

tinkered with it last night and found the float jet was very dirty and it was not closing all the way. so i cleaned the carb. it was pretty dirty and had a bit of water droplets in the float bowl.
it now does not pour fuel out the top of the carb at all. starts really good but only idles for about 20 seconds then dies. if i move the throttle up and get 1500 rpm out of it , it idles high but stays running.
im thinking its not getting enough fuel at idle because when it dies, i need to pump the throttle once before starting. i never before had to do that.
