floor replacement?

I have a 16' fiberglass boat with a mushy floor. The mushy section is about 2'x5' in which the wood underneath the fiberglass is rotted. I was wondering if this needs to be replaced, or if it is just something I could deal with for a while and have it replaced later. I have talked to one boat repair company and they estimated the repair at 4-600 if it is just that section and around $1200 if it is the whole floor. If it needs to be replaced is this something I could do myself or is it best left to professionals.

Thanks in advance.

Re: floor replacement?

A big WELCOME your way -------------

There are hundreds of posts here from guys who faced the same problem and were not in a big hurry to turn their wallet upside down.

Go to the Project Boats Section and there are plenty of stories there. Also check out the red Search function at the top of the page and enter something like "floor rot" or simular and read away.

I have done it and it is a job but one that anyone with average do-it-yourselfer skills can handle. Often it turns out that the transom also needs to be done.
