I could use a little help.. I have a 19' Bayliner fish/ski a 2000..the floor has delaminated/rotted in a few places. I pulled up all the carpet, I am ready to cut...slowly and not too deep the sections. I know I will need to replace the floor with marine grade plywood. There are a few areas which i could use some information.
First after pulling up the carpet the floor looks like it was painted?, or is it something else they put on the floor??(I bought the boat new). So after I cut the floor and reinstall and securing the floor in. Then do I sand the entire floor? and epoxy it? or paint? before installing the carpet?? Also I did some checking on epoxy...what is your opinion on West Marine products??
I would really appreciate any help...wether on materials,tips...do and especially the DONT"S... Thanks I do appreciate your help

Re: floor rotting

Check out the sticky's in this section of the forum on fiberglass. Also do a search on deck repair or deck replacement. What you have is fiberglass resin and mat covering the plywood. That is what you will need to used to replace the deck if you want to do it properly. If it looks painted it could be paint or epoxy covering the fiberglass, hard to say without a picture.

You are in the denial stage of boat restoration. Your deck is rotten which means you should probably replace the entire deck otherwise you are going to fix the problem more then once. Also if your deck is rotten, the stringers and bulkheads (think floor joists) under the floor are most likely rotten too, and depending on the type of boat the transom is probably wet too.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news... Don't shoot the messenger.

Good news is there's lots of people here willing to help you with your question and examples of how to fix it the right way.

Re: floor rotting

I am in the same boat! LOL I am replacing my deck in a couple of weeks so your not alone. I plan to use plywood being sure to seal everything with CSM and cloth. I may add an additional mat or two when wetting and I plan to have a "new" boat by Febuary. Good luck and keep us posted. I am a newbie, but I am trying to learn everything before purchasing materials.
