I've got an engine with less than 10 hours on it that has had water in 4 of the cylinders for over 6 weeks while at the Julington Creek Marina in Jacksonville that installed the engine. Does anyone have any suggestions on shops in the area that can repair this engine instead of just scrapping it? Thanks for your assistance!!

I would talk to the marina and see if they warranty the work....the people there are very nice....I have a friend that works there ...The people at Haskell marine are also very helpful and do great work...There about the only marine shop that will not jack up the bill and will always explain what you need to do to repair it yourself...I have tried different boat shops and have never found anyone as helpful as haskell marine..You could also call power exchange on beaver st. and see if they carry what you need....

I have talked and talked and talked to the marina. I haven't found anyone that is nice (Shawn or Ed Hamilton). They have had the boat for SIX WEEKS and just finally took the engine out of the boat last week. They didn't even bother getting the water out of the cylinders when I had it Sea Towed back to them IN JUNE! Ed has consistantly not done what he said he would do. Ed is just trying to **** me off; I hope he gets sopoened to go to court on his day off. And Shawn said "even if it was our negligence, it's been over 30 days so it is not our problem". They can't say why they didn't recommend to replace the 8 year old exhaust manifolds when they replaced the engine, but since that is where they think the water came from, the warranty is now void. Julington Creek Marina is not done hearing from me, and I will be getting the pieces of my boat out of there very soon. I'm surprised about Haskell, but maybe they've gotten better over the past few years. They use to really put my girlfriend through the wringer with her boat. Thanks for the tip about the Power Exchange; I'll give them a call. If you talk to your friend, ask him who in Jacksonville can repair the damage done from leaving the water in the engine all this time. Thanks!

Ever tought about doing it on your own? If you do have a hoist or can borrow one getting the engine out isnt really a big deal...and once you get it out its pretty simple depending what you need done ..but fact is anywhere you take the boat your looking at least 15hrs of labor + parts and it will not be a complete rebiuld...
If you could do the work on your own you should be able to get it done for no more than 4-500 bux or just get another used motor rebuild it and just swap them..if water has been sitting in those cyls for so long the engnine is prolly toast

I have heard several different horror stories about Julington creek marina over the years...
They should have checked the exhaust manifolds before re-assembly..I have never heard of any one
with that 8 yr. old parts and not checking them before they put it back together...If they will not stand behind what they have done and there bad decision not to check them I would talk with a attorney and see if you have a case...Talk to other mechanics and see what they say..If they confirm that they should have checked them have them put it in writing and consult a attorney....

Floyd,

I hope you are successful in getting some restitution out of the incompentent shop. If you shop around, you can probably get a brand new GM marine long block without the intake manifold and exhaust manifolds and risers for $2500 to $2750. Ebay has them from time to time. These are the exact blocks that Merc, Crusader/PleasureCraft, Indmar,Volvo, and most everyone making marinized 5.7's use (and yes, they are all assembled in Mexico). The problem you may have though, is they'll be Vortecs, while your current engine isn't. I don't personally know how much of your current engine can be swapped over to a Vortec, but somebody on the board will be able to tell you. If you can make the swap, you'll be in for a surprise with the increase in performance. Carbureted Vortecs put out 300 to 310 HP with a four barrel.
