:) Why is it that everybody seems to feel that the government owes them something when a storm strikes?????

The Floridians are complaining that the government was to slow with aid, food, water etc:!!!! They had a good 5 days to prepare!!!!
Why didn't they stock up on water, canned or dry food, propane, sterno, a tank full of gas etc:!!! All of the above should have been already stocked!!!!

Blame it on the President!!!! ;)

Re: FLORIDIANS

It's called manufactured socialism, and has been successful to a large degree.
It is upsrtting to have to babysit the able-bodied in addition to the obligatory "special needs" folks (that nobody resents helping, BTW).

The "you owe us" mentality is gleefully on display on the CBS news, and the shell-shocked citizenry is shown standing in long lines. Reporters only need to make an appearance, and some will leave the ice line to get in line to be interviewed. "Yes, it's all Bush's fault. And thet daimed brutha of his is wuthless".
Take it for what it is...Liberalism on display, both cause and effect.

I call it the welfare entitlement syndrome, there's no need to prepare for a hurricane, just sit on your lazy butt and let it happen, then complain you have no food, ice, shelter, wait a bit and Uncle Sam gives it to you, does it for you, or doles it out to you, and it's all free. Why spend your own money. ;)

Re: FLORIDIANS

We aren't all like that.
Everglades City - pop about 800. Most of it wiped out. Their city spokesman told a news crew, "FEMA's not here and we don't need 'em. We take care of ourselves in Everglades City."

I like to think that most of us Floridians are like that. When Ivan and Dennis came through my area, the people that I associate with broke out the chainsaws and went to work. We didn't wait to be rescued, we were the rescuers in our neighborhoods.
We stocked up on food, water, and gas. For Dennis, I even bought a window a/c unit and had friends sleeping in a nice 75 degree house when it was 89 outside at night.
I know where I live and the dangers. I will always be prepared. I think there are a few that give the rest a bad name.

Re: FLORIDIANS

i had my stuff ready for days before wilma. i had enough food water and my gen. ready and serviced. for a 5 days of survival. I have 2 girls and a son and my wife thats 5 people so its not easy. But i wait for no one to give me anything. people must learn to survive on there own. i admit i was north of the storm but one little hook and wilma could have been right on top of us. last year i was hit 3 times and it is not a good thing belive me. so you can just imagine when i see these people say the bad things about Bush and Bush i think to myself get a grip and pull yourself together, in my area there are 5 homes, we all got together and made a plan. and we watch after each other.we made plans on cooking, keeping ourselfs clean, keep healthy, share security duty for our property. we left no stone unturned. it can be done but you must prepare for the worst and hope for the best. this time our plan did not have to go into action, but we have one in place and like they say a country can survive. Braxton :D

Re: FLORIDIANS

That's the spirit, Braxton!
We gotta depend on ourselves. We also have to make sure that our neighbors are taken care of. I have one elderly couple in my neighborhood. After the storms, there always seems to be a neighbor at their house helping, cleaning, whatever they need.

That's how a community works together.

Re: FLORIDIANS

having gone through a few canes on the gulf coast and here on the atlantic coast, we grew up knowing that for 3 to 5 days after a strike your on your own. if you did not leave when directed its YOUR problem. roads must be cleared, power grids verified as secured, bridges must be inspected. all takes time. so for at least 72 hours your on your own. if you cannot take care of your self and your neighbors your sunk. myself I get tired of the whine. the only thing I faulted our commander in chief for is on tuesday morning there should have been a military chopper on the roof of every hospital in the affected area as well as VA centers and nursing homes. the GPS cordinates are easily obtainable for any address you wish taking the flight navigation problem out of the picture.
the sick, elderly and infirm require govt action as the rest of the populace is mostly powerless for some days. however the healty and stupid need no assistance.
we get them here each year, dumbarse tourons excited about their "first" hurricane then whine cause they endup with little food no sanitation and horror of horrors, no AC. but each hurricane brings them out.
