So I went out and was boating today and I hit a pile of rocks. When I pulled my boat out, a 1992 180SE with 4.3L OMC Cobra, I could smell a strong odor of hydraulic fluid. I did notice there was cavitation on the way back to the dock. I examined my prop and noticed there was a chunk taken out of one blade and another one was bent. Ive taken the prop off however I'm concerned that there is a seal that is now leaking or something because it is leaking the fluid. How do I take it apart past the prop and examine any seals?. It doesn't appear that the shaft is bent and if it is it is slight.

Any "slight bend" will get worse as you accelerate.
Hook up the hose and start the motor. Put it in gear and check the propshaft for wobble???
The way to check for a leak is to drain the unit and pressure test it.
What color is the oil?
After the pressure test? Then you can get the manual and it will explain how to disassemble.
Find a parts diagram for your motor/drive and you'll get better idea on what you need to get for repair??
You'll need a puller of sorts with special arms or a custom made homebrew one.

Re: Fluid Leaking at prop after hitting rocks

The oil is a dark color oil. I have pulled the prop and things. It appears that the shaft is bent. I have gone as far as I can figure out. I'm trying to pull the shaft however I believe I need a puller or something. Should I drain the oil firs from the lower unit? What is the steps for pulling the shaft?

I've looked at the small manual that came with the boat but it is just a maintenance manual and provides small details about the engine and maintenance details.

It looks like the propeller shaft is slightly bent so I will have to take it out and have it fixed. I bought a OMC Manual by Seloc today and currently reading it. The only hand up I have is when I pull the Carrier out will the shaft come out with it and if so will stuff fall in behind it. I looked all day on U-Tube and Iboat to find a video on removing the Propeller Shaft however there doesn't seem to be one out there.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,... The 1st thing to do is get the drive off the boat, 'n on the bench,...

Pull the 6 nuts, 'n the trim rams, then the drive...

Yer goin' in Deep, so ya might as well get Comfortable at it.....

Drain the oil. Then remove the drive.
Get a FACTORY manual.
I doubt your gonna get the shaft straightened.
The sell them new.
Getting it out's gonna be tricky.
You'll need a long 7/8 wrench and someway to turn the pinion shaft to undo the pinion nut.
Then the shaft/gears will come out.
My memory(might be wrong) but I think you can change the propshaft with out shimming the unit.
I'll get my manual out and check and post later.
You might want to build some kind of drive stand. Very hard to work on laying on the bench.
