I figured this section was good for this question.

I have 30deg flush mount rod holders I'm looking to install. My big question is how do you drill the hole in the gunwale to 30*? I was thinking of making a guide with a 2x4, but I don't have a drill press to even make that. With as many rod holders out ther as there are, there has to be a (relatively) easy way to do it.

I am getting ready to do the same thing. I was going to take a piece of PVC pipe the same dimension as the rod holder. Cut it at a 30 degree angle. Trace with marker and then measure the hole i need to cut. I was going to cut the hole with an auger drill bit. The hole now should be big enough now to accomodate the rod holder.

You all make to much work out of it.. It's a round hole but you can drill it on an angle if you want it eliptical. Just use a everyday off the shelf hole saw. Find center of the hole, get it started and rock it back. If it's off a little it doesn't matter, the flange is flush with the deck.

After thought---- Remember to size up the fit before you drill. Make sure that when that tube goes in that it doesn't interfere with the sides of the boat. I've had to cant them outward on a couple and be carfeful not to interfere with things like speaker systems, wiring looms, etc. They really look nice when done but sometimes they aren't the right choice and a rocket launcher actually works better.
