I have a 20 hp Evinrude 1990. I live in the tampa area and go fishing 2 to 3 times a month. When i return home from fishing i run the engine in a 30 gallon tub of water for about 15 to 20 min everytime. I have changed the water pump ***. everyyear, butwould like to know if i should flush out the engine with a descaling flush, and would like to know which is a good one to get. Thanks to anyone who would like to give me some advice.

You are at "overkill" now. Waterpump every 2-3 years is plenty, unless you boat in sandy water. A 5 min flush (after thermostats open) on the flusher is sufficient as well. That motor is already 21 years old. You can waste time and $ on descaling flush and that 30 gal of water, but I doubt you need it, nor that it will provide any benefit.

I have to agree with Chris somewhat, but what we do not know is if sweet 16 has owned this motor since it was new & or how it was treated preior to his owning it as far as salt deposits.

If you are really concerned, one quick way would be to pull the head, you can soon see if the water passageways have any salt deposits.

I agree with the fellas sweet sixteen. I live in FL too and follow the same procedures you do. So far so good. I wouldn't bother wasting money on a special product. Letting it run in the tank for 20 min after going to the beach is fine. I try to go to and from the ocean via a river if at all possible. That way the river rinses the motor out for me on the return trip. Happy boating!
