Flush out using muffs

1990 Merc Alpha1. Should my lower unit create enough suction out of the water to suck up antifreeze using just the muffs connected to a hose (with no pressure from water hose). A sales guy tried to sell me this Winterizing kit that you hook to the muffs, and its suppose to suck it right up. I hooked up a hose to my muffs and got very light suction. How much suction should I have??

If the bucket device is above the impeller pickup, it should be fine, but it wont siphon from a bucket, it will need to be imersed in the water or have a gravity feed throught the hose.. it will not "lift" the water through the hose. Not in my experience anyways...

Personally I use a sump pump in a bucket of antifreese for positive pressure to the impeller....

Do you loose alot of antifreeze on the ground using your muffs? I dont think my muffs seal up enough to really be effective?

Maybe try some duct tape? Some of the bigger coolers have a drain that you can connect a hose too.........

I like the Camco kit.It allows you to run using garden hose pressure for the water until you are warmed up and stat is open and then you can slowly swich over to AF using the valve so you will keep the flow and it will kind of be primed for the reduction in feed to gravity.Charlie

What I have always done is when engine is cold, completely drain water from engine ( block & manifolds) and that way your not dilluting your antifreze and positive that you have most of the water out of block & manifolds. Then I hook muffs up to a hose with a funnel that a buddy holds above lower unit constantly pooring anitfreeze untill coming out exhaust strong (I always stay at throttle & ignition watching tep, just in case). This way you dont have to worry about overheating engine like you do if you start process with engine already up to temp.
I also check both engine bank plugs to make sure full of antifreeze and also manifolds.

Has always worked for me.

If you drain the water from the engine then why do you need to fill it back up with antifreeze? With the water out there is nothing in there to freeze.

Some people think that the non-tox antifreeze helps prevent corrosion.

muc
ANY TYPE OF ANTIFREEZE HELPS FIGHT COROSSION. I pull off the out drive and store it in the basement and use a home made adapter to feed straight into the incomming water line going into the motor through the transom. I use a 5 gallon bucket and a sump pump in which a garden hose screws on to the pump and hook the other end to the inlet line going to your motor that you have fabricated. turn on the sump pump and start the engine and let it warm up to open up the thermostat. I never unhook or drain any hoses. But I don't worry about antifreeze either. Freightliner at Cleveland NC builds the tractors and bring them to us and we disassemble the trucks and ship them to south africa after draining all the fluids . I keep 55 gallons of the synthetic pink antifreeze here at home.Freightliner says that they pay $17.95 a gallon for it and it is a one time deal that it never goes bad.you never have to change it. so I sell it to a lot of people fo $50.00 bucks a drum.
