I now have the owners manual for my Mercruiser. I looked up the info on flushing the motor for winter storage. Maybe I am not familiar enough with the motor yet. It says to:
A. Remove thermostat housing or hose and fill with coolant until block and head are full.
B. Remove water hose from exhaust manifold and fill manifold with coolant

Anyone every do this?

Re: Flushing 3.0L Mercruiser

I want to know how to winterize it now so when I am ready to put her down for the season I won't have to do this research. Just planning ahead.

if the manual is confuseing you it may be better to pay someone and watch how they do it this year because if it is done worng its all over for the motor

tommays

Before you do those steps make sure you drain all the water you can out of her.Charlie

Re: Flushing 3.0L Mercruiser

For winterizing here's what i've found easiest from experience. All you'll need is a 2 ft piece of hose of same diameter to that which runs from transom to the thermostat housing. This is the raw water supply hose feeding the motor. Get it from any part's store, along with a hose clamp, and funnel. Cost is less than $5.

Find and remove coolant drain plugs on block and on manifold (only one manifold so it's easy). On my 2002 there are two blue hoses that have quick disconnect fittings on the end, which make it super easy. Drain out all the raw water from block and manifold then replace plugs. Disconnect that hose running from transom to the thermo housing, at the thermostat housing. Connect your 2 foot length of hose you bought to the thermostat housing. Remove belt around water pump pulley so you can turn pulley by hand. Pour antifreeze into your new hose on thermo housing while turning water pump by hand clockwise to help circulate it. Your done when you see a good amount exit the exhaust ports from the transom/outdrive. Secure this hose up somehow to keep antifreeze from pouring out. Try and keep it higher than the entire exhaust manifold to ensure antifreeze stays in there. Pour some, or the remaining, antifreeze into the disconnected hose coming from transom till it comes out the water inlet holes on the lower part of outdrive. Re-attach the belt going around water pump. Next year all you have to do is connect the one hose on the thermo housing and you're good. Keep the outdrive tilted all the way down to prevent water from collecting in the propshaft area and freezing. If you have to keep it tilted up then cover it well to keep water from freezing in there and cracking something, or remove the outdrive and store indoors.

I use a CAMCO Anti-Freeze Winterizing Kit. Check boatersworld.com. Not to expensive and easy to use.

I would say yes. I have a 3.0 Merc I/O as well. The kit comes with everything needed with the exception of the antifreeze.

I went to the mercstuff.com site and he said not to use the winterizing kits that they are junk but this one doesn't look like the ones he is showing. I think I will have to try it.

Re: Flushing 3.0L Mercruiser

I used it last year and when I pulled my boat up for the first run of this year it started right up and had no trouble with it so I would say it worked for me. I also did all the other required items for winter. Gas treatment, fogging, oil change and so on. I like it cause it's real easy to use. I run my engine till operating temp and cut the valve over to all antifreeze. Takes about 3 gallons when you add in the waist coming out the exhaust. Just my opinion. You will need to find a way that works best for you.

This will give me the extra security of having the motor winterized the correct way. Thanks VAD! I will be shopping this weekend.

Re: Flushing 3.0L Mercruiser

I have used the Camco kit for 5 years now and it is the best .Simple to use!!!Make sure the antifreeze and water combo that you put in the tank is not cold.If it is ,it will close the thermostat and you dont want that!!!I keep the antifreeze in my boiler room the day before to keep it warm and I mix it with warm water so the thermostat stays open while winterizing.I usually have my wife monitor the antifreeze mix while it is running down and I fog the motor at the same time so just as the mix is almost empty ,I bombard the carb with a can of fogging oil in one hand and a cup of Marvel mystery oil in the other to stall the motor just before the antifreeze mix id empty.Charlie

I agree completely Charlie. Doesn't take near as long as removing all the drain plugs to drain the water.

Re: Flushing 3.0L Mercruiser

It is best to use Sierra, non-toxic, antifreeze. The cheap pink RV stuff is really not meant for these engines. Also, you can mix windshield washer fluid instead of water in the antifreeze to not raise the freezing point like water will.

I use the camco kit and found straight antifreeze a little thick to pull through the engine. Thus mixing water or washer fluid helps it become more viscous(sp?).

Hi
Another good thing is to run the engine on muffs with fresh water before winterizing it.
Regards
Affa
