I have a 2003 Volvo Penta 5.0 GXI-B that comes with a flushing tube on the starboard side of each engine. The owners manual states that I should not start the engines while flushing. My problem is that I cannot get either engine to flush any saltwater out by simply attaching the garden hose and turning on the water. Am I missing something simple? I have not had any cooling issues so I wouldn't expect any blockages.

I would guess that you have a blockage in you hose somewhere or in the hose connectors to the block. OI would pull the hoses and check for proper flow and stick a awl or pick up into the block connector as there may be a sediment blockage preventing the water from entering.

I appreciate it, tried that but still didn't work. Not sure what to do next, local Volvo mechanic told me it was a add on and I needed to remove it however I doubt that since it refers to it in the owners manual.

My last boat had a hook up similar to yours. Its a pretty simple system. Mine had a single garden hose connector mounted to the exterior of the hull that led to a hose to a " Y" that split a hose each bank of the block. I do know it was not for running the engine, just flushing. I still bet you have a sediment plug at the block/hose connections. You may have to get aggressive with a sharp object to pierce it.
