sorry if this is a double post...tried to post earlier but now i can't find it.
anyway, i had an outdrive that had a bit of milky oil in it. just finished reassembly and want to flush it before reinstall. any reason not to use motor oil? i don't want to use gear lube because of cost/weight--i feel that a thinner oil would be better. of course i'd be sure to drain completely and fill with the proper gear oil.

Ayuh,... The Best way is to fill it up,+ run it...
Then rechange the oil on a shorter than normal interval...

Doin' what you're asking leaves whatever you flush with in the drive...
Probably only minimumly better than the tiny bit of water...

Did you find out WHY the oil was milky??? Pressure testing the drive would be a good idea

think so...i have a prior postings detailing.

@bond-o: guess i figured that a tiny bit of oil was better than a tiny bit of water...i guess i'll just fill it normal, and recheck.

I have always used the same lube as was in it. and replaced with the same too. when you drained it did the fluid change from milky to just dirty. the fliud in the upper half on most I have seen seems to push out any water. remember water is heavier and will find the lowest point when allowed to settle.
