I was curious to know what is the best method of flushing out an I/O engine while it is in the water? I am talking about a flush in salt water?

I have seen that Volvo has a Neutra-Salt engine flush setup, and then I have also seen a Perko flush valve system of some sort.

Do Mercuiser 3.0L's come with some sort of installed flush system? I've seen people talk about a system that didn't require the engine to be running?

The boat I purchased is a 2005 Sea Ray 180 Sport which has the 3.0L Mercuiser I/O.

What is the best way to flush this engine while in the water? Any tips appreciated.

Re: Flushing I/O while in water?

if u are handy u can rig up your own, i plum up one on my merc 5.7 , this is how i do it.

the hose that bring in the water from the outdrive water pump, just before it goes into the power stering cooler, i pet in a brass t on that t solder three ball valve turn off, one end of the t connect to the inlet hose from the transom, the next end goes into the power stering cooler.

the third end i drill a hole through the transome upper section, i then install a garden hose barb fitting ,

now how it works, after every fishing trip i just turn the valve that brings in the water from the drive to close.

i then install the garden hose to the upper end, then start the engine , turn the upper valve open all the fresh water is now going through the engine and risers/manifold, the third valve closer to the power stering stay open, i then realise i did not need a third anyway, after you sure the the engine is flush out , turn the valve that bringing in the fresh water to close while the engine is still running.

dont ever turn the engine off before the water is turn off.

when finish and the engine is off water is off, turn the saltwater inlet valve back to on, dont foget to do that or else when you start the boat u will not get any water to cool the engine, this home made set up work like a charm. just get the right sise valve that match the sise of the inlet hose. good luck.

boat stays in the water all summer, still flush
