I have a 1986 115 Merc - 6cyc - Rebuilt in 1999. I use the engine in salt water. When I bring it home and flush out the engine with the "ear muffs" I noticed that the water turned a little brown. Is that just the exhaust........?

Re: Flushing out the engine

It could be partially due to exhaust, but more likely due to buildup in you water cooling system, dirt, debri, etc.. You'd be surprised what you may find inside the water jackets, crusty dirt residue that is hardened to stone...

But I can't be for sure... I wonder if you can use some kind of detergent like mixing up a very light soap solution in one of those miracle grow fertilizer sprayers and hook that on your hose befor the ear muffs? I bet that would really clean it out well...

When flushing my outboard I use Salt-Away and haven't had any problems yet. Found it at West Marine and it is supposed to help flush out salt and corrosion and provide protection from corrosion. You can also use it to rinse the salt off of your boat. It hooks up to the end of your garden hose kind of like one of those Miracle-Gro hose end sprayers.

www.saltawayproducts.com
