I have a 3.0L I/O mercruiser with Alpha one outdrive. I took the boat out on the lake the other day and was having problem getting a steady rpm running. Done all the pre boating stuff the night before (starting the engine with muff on to check that everything is in working condition). In the morning around 11:00am when I took the boat to the lake and launch it. Initially when turning the start switch there was no engine turning over. After a couple of try the was a clicking sound and engine still would not start. Wait a minute and tried again and still nothing and on the 3rd try the starter engage and the engine turn over. Left it at idle for about 5 minutes to get the engine warm and was running fine.

Took the boat out and was running fine and out on plane at around 3000rpm. About 400 or 500 yards out into the lake the engine rpm keep climbing and the speed drop and was out of plane pretty quick. Meanwhile, rpm is still climbing until I took the engine out of gear and the rpm got down to idling range. I left it idling for a few minute and and then put it back into gear and the rpm was steady after that.

Don't know where to begin to trouble shoot this problem. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

breeze, sounds like you may have a bad prop hub or (spun prop) Check this out:
http://www.marinemechanic.com/2000/images/prop_hub.htm
The starting issue is something else. Could be as simple as loose or corroded electrical connections. Clean up all your grounds and battery terminals and have the battery load tested and charged.

Sounds like it is time to rehub the prop.Hopefully this will be your biggest repair bill this year!!! Charlie

I did not check the hub when I got the boat out of the water. Say if the hud gone bad that day should I still be able to get the boat moving. After the rpm went up and back to idle and I got the boat moving and was running good at 2500 to 3000 rpm and was cruising the lake for another 2 hours. Got in and out of the hole without any incident as I did earlier. I will check the prop hub. Could it be something else beside the prop hub??

I would hate to add some misinformation, but the only time I was on a boat that spun its prop we could not get back into it,half throttle at the most. we limped back to the dock, and that was on a short little 15 ft bass boat....Best thing to do would be to mark your hub and prop and take it for a spin if it happens again take a look at your marks, if they still match its probably not your hub....

you may wish to check the engine coupler. sometimes this can be checked from inside the engine compartment. With a flashlight look at the stern side of your engine, where the outdrive is received at the center of your crankshaft, look for aluminum shavings or dust.
there are other posts on this site dealing with this too.
