Hey everybody-I needed to replace the starter on my 2005 sea Ray 185. It has a 4.3 Mercruiser in it. When I pulled the old starter, noticed the pinion was pretty chewed up. So, I examined the fly wheel, and noticed the teeth were a little shiny. There was also some metal shavings under the fly wheel. Check out the attached Photo. Let me know if you guys think The fly wheel condition is concerning. Also, should I be able to turn the fly wheel by hand? I cannot.

Shiny teeth are normal. The flywheel is a little marked up, but not bad. The metal shavings are probably from the starter teeth.

Why would you try to turn the flywheel? Are you concerned about the motor being locked up?

Were all the starter bolts in place and tight? Loose, missing or broken bolts can cause the teeth to get chewed up.

Thank you for getting back to me! I was trying to turn the fly wheel to inspect the rest of the teeth.

Ayuh,...... I've seen better lookin' ring gear teeth, but I wouldn't pull the motor to change that one,.....

You can turn the motor over with a pry bar through the starter hole, with the ouitdrive down,.....
But by hand,..??... Nope,.....
