I'm installing a new engine replacing an 87' 260 350 5.7 sn-B552171 with a new power pack the original engine has a 14 inch flywheel but the new engine has a 12 1/4 flywheel to avoid swapping the flywheel is there a starter that would work with the 12 ?

Howdy,

You probably answered your own question. Of course is would be better to use the old flywheel if it fits. A flywheel that is 2 inches smaller in diameter indicates to me that the flywheel housing might be different too.

You better ensure that your current flywheel housing (and other stuff, etc) fits the "new" engine.

If ANY Mercruiser "350" used a 12 1/4"flywheel, you can rest assured that there's a starter to fit......but I would use the other flywheel and starter if it's still "good"

There might be other things to consider. (like which rear main seal is it, Vortech?, etc)

Ayuh,.... The starter mounting hole drillings in the block determine which flywheel can be used...
If the block is drilled with All 3 holes, you can run Either starter/ flywheel comb..
Change flywheels, 'n ya Gotta change starters...

Will yer Coupler bolt to the 12" flywheel,..??

Bond-o you are right the coupler will not fit the 12 inch , so definetly i have to use the old flywheel wich still in a good shape , since I'm replacing the starter anyways I was just trying to avoid changing flywheels i guess i'll find out this weekend. thanks for the input guys.
