On my 1960 Johnson seahorse 18 the flywheel is catching the throttle and taking it to a full position or no throttle at all(depends on which way i turn it). We have been doing some work on the coils and points so i dont know it i missed something taking the wheel on and off.

You'll need to remove the flywheel and take a look underneath. It's possible you have one of coils sticking out to far from the "boss" and it's catching on the flywheel magnet, or, there is a spark plug wire retainer in the wrong place, or a long screw put in where a short screw should have been. There's a bunch of possibilities so, take your time and look close.

Re: Flywheel catching on throttle

sounds to me like its something with the turn plate. the reason i am saying this is, throttle is moved by the turn plate. but as mentioned, the flywheel will have to come off in order to see what needs to be rendered. good luck and post back.

if it was fine before you took the f/w off..it's something you worked on or replaced while you had it off

Here is what I would suggest. Pour yourself a three finger Scotch, sit in a chair beside your motor with your tiller in one hand and your Scotch in the other. Contemplate and observe. (making certain you have lots of light shining on the linkage) Turn your throttle back and forth and all of a sudden the problem will be obvious to you. Or... get your camera out and take a bunch of good quality pictures and post them for us to contemplate. I know which route I would prefer. If after six fingers you haven't solved the problem you probably won't... until another session another day. Best of luck. I really like your avitar. Wish I could enlarge it. Rick.
P.S. you may want to leave the flywheel on for the first session.

A list of what you have done would help:
Did you have the magneto plate off?
Did you take the coils off....etc.

Re: Flywheel catching on throttle

I have been taking the coils/condesors/points and the whole plate off doing some work with the spark trying to get both of the cylinders running good.I did order all new coils and a tune up kit to install. but as for the magneto plate it has never been taken off of the flywheel. i also did install a new plug wire for the top cylinder. I have everything installed right now, with everything in place but the coils and tune up kit have not yet arrived

Re: Flywheel catching on throttle

how did you replace the sparkplug wire w/o removing the mag plate?....just as an unsolicitied suggestion,I'd advise you to mark the coil for the #1 cylinder and make sure the sparkplug wire is marked as well for #1 before removing the mag plate <#1 coil is about inline with carb when throttle is in start position>..also consider marking magplate position relative to top of block <scribe mark or white dot of some kind>..take a pic of setup before removing plate, then take a pic or mark the underside of mag plate relative to plug wire routing and wire hold down clamps. Seems commonsensical and will help if you get distracted during the replacement process. The sparkplug wire "twist" onto the spike in the center of the coil and the wire and terminal pull out of the boot on the other end < a litttle WD40 helps immensely>

What type of puller did you use to get the flywheel off ? You have bent the flywheel if you used a puller that grabs the outside of the wheel.

zooged...your coils probably aren't aligned properly and the flywheel is rubbing them...do you know how to align them?

Re: Flywheel catching on throttle

I did use a puller that pulls on the center of wheel. And I did take off the coils and put on the wheel and it didnt catch at all but the coils are cracked and I think they have expanded and are bigger than they originaly were.the coils are down in place like they should be, but any advise and the installation of the new coils/points/condensors I ordered would be great!!

Re: Flywheel catching on throttle

Well parts finally arrived so tonight it installed everything and even bought new plugs and wire(s) and it still was catching the throttle so I checked everything and it all looked good except for the bottom coil which wasnt flush with the boss. It all works great now getting good spark with no problems(yet?) only thing left is the starter which is a very easy fix so hopefuly tomorrow will be the test.
