The is a 2003 25hp Johnson

The pull cord knot is keeping the starter pawl from retracting. If they don?t retract the flywheel destroys them. The manual recommends this knot but its just too bulky. The knot is greased and pulled human tight.

Try tying a smaller knot.

the knot diagram is for the pull handle . that gits a lot of stress . the one on the flywheel should never reach the end with the proper length rope so you can use a smaler knot.

Knot experimentation required. Post what works when you are done for us all to learn from.:)

Tie a figure eight knot, that should work just fine... Edit, never mind that is what it looks like...

Re: Flywheel eating starter pawls

An overhand knot pulled tight with tools did the job. The manual specifically instructed to use the figure 8 knot on the starter pulley. This isn?t the first time the manual hasn?t made sense. Also the replacement pull cord the Johnson dealership gave me was slightly thicker than the factory original

Thanks for the help

Yep. that looks like the cord that is normally used with the models such as the older 2cyl 28,35,40hp engines etc.
