If the timing belt is good, you may simply remove the eight 5/16" bolts and take off the outer flywheel. Heck, You might even be able to install a new timing belt after removing just the outer flywheel. The starter may be removed w/o removing any part of the flywheel,

A stator on a distributor Merc fits around the inner part of the flywheel. You may just remove the outer flywheel to replace both.

You can jam the flywheel ring gear with a screwdriver to the block, socket on the flywheel nut, or use the outer bolts on the flywheel to hold it, with a wrench. Use some blue locktight on the distributor pully bolt and the outer flywheel bolts, when you reassemble.

Re: flywheel holder &more

thanks chris 1956 .im torn down sir .distrubtor off the STATOR( LOL) is off .thanks for the tips.so i havethe 8 bolts from the center out to remove flywheel the stator and belt.and you can change the belt like this ,your the man:Dbut im not doing that because some one must of just changed it !!!!!using your method because the 8 bolts in the center that i took off already had the red paint chewed up on them from putting the new belt on .so ahead of schedule.BUT what do i torque them too and should i put a drop of locktite?

Use blue locktite. Torque to the standard for 5/16" bolts, aw heck, just make them tight, one hand on the wrench only......
