I have a 1980 35HP Evinrude. Does anybody have a trick for holding the flywheel while doing 105# of torque?

I see they make a special holder but I don't have one.

Any help appreciated.

Re: Flywheel Holder

Check with your automotive parts store... ask about a flywheel turning tool that mechanics use to turn the flywheel when installing a clutch and pressure plate on a standard shift automobile. We refer to it as a spanner wrench.

The one pictured here is a Snap On tool. The curved portion I had to heat and bend slightly so that it would fit all of the hp flywheels (different diameters). You may not need to bother with the heat and bend part.

I've used a 2000 Lb strength tie-down strap wrapped around the flywheel, then secured around the lifting eye on a 70 HP Johnson and a 50 HP Evinrude I owned. It helps to have a second pair of hands just to make sure the strap doesn't slip. Never had a problem.

Wedging a screwdrive against the block then into the flywheel teeth if applicable.

Joe's got the best one if you have teeth on the flywheel.

Take out a spark plug and put piston to bottom of stroke, place a foot or 2 of soft braided rope in the cylinder & tighten nut.

+1 on this. I fed as much rope as I was able into both cylinders...though not necessary. Worked like a champ. Better yet, it is a free solution if you have some soft braided rope laying around.

If you use the rope trick, just make sure the ports are closed on the up stroke before you stuff the rope in as you don't want to cut off a piece of the rope in a port. I used this method yrs ago on snowmobiles and it worked good.

To be honest mine isn't as good looking as the one in the picture. But it similar and works very well. I just can't remember where I bought it. Rick.
