Good Afternoon

I have a 1995/6 Volvo DP-D1 with a repower and I have started experiencing noise coming from inside the Flywheel Housing. I am wondering what the best way to trouble shoot the problem up until removing the engine
I have the ability to drop the outdrive off but I am not sure if I can run the enging with it off to see of the bearings inside are the cause of the issue or if it is the Ujoint

Thanks
Jack

Just remove the upper gear housing, no need to remove the whole outdrive. You will probably find water in the bellows, and water in the bearings in the flywheel housing. At that point, you can try to pull the shaft out the back after removing the gear box, if you can't because of rust and corrosion of the bearing (Highly likely) then you have to pull the engine to replace the bearing.

Thanks Don
If it does come out, can I try running the engine to see if the noise is still there or do you think a visual inspection should be enough ?

If you pull the upper gear box and there is water in the bellows, the pull the rear seal out of the flywheel cover. If you see rusty milky grease, you found your problem.
