Re: Flywheel key 1972 35/45/55 help

Yup you need a big of work.

Take a straight blade screwdriver and tap the old one out..
Go to the merucry dealer and order the keys. I bought mine and they were 5 bucks for a 2 pack.
Part number 28-F92498

Lap the crankshaft and flywheel or it may not sit correctly.
Get yourself a tap and die set and clean up those threads and buy a new lock nut for the flywheel.
When you're ready to put it back, put a bit of anti seize on the crankshaft and torque it down

Re: Flywheel key 1972 35/45/55 help

Thanks for that particularly the part number....none on uk e bay but could get one sent to my buddy in PA for shipment.....trying to get one in the UK if possible ....Huge ridges in the flywheel taper so I think its even beyond lapping though I will try it ...think its more like Locktite and when it comes off again heat the threaded area to bust it ...may try to lock the timing ring seperatly so it does not spin if the keyway breaks again ( coil igniton so flywheel position not critical but timing ring is ..can mark it to see if flywheel has moved ) thanks again

Re: Flywheel key 1972 35/45/55 help

UPDATE I ground a small flat on the bottom of the crankshaft (with die grinder ) where the ignition contact opening ring sits ..locktite it on and put a wedge behind the ring in the slot.....Now if the flyweel does move the timing does not and I have marked the wheel and crank to see if it moves....
Seperate key for the flywheel.

Re: Flywheel key 1972 35/45/55 help

I have the same problem and found keys and diagrams for most of the other parts at Crowleymarine.com. Also you need some emry cloth to sand the shaft along with some Grinding Grease which helps clean the shaft and seat the flywheel on properly.
