Flywheel nut stuck!

Hey guys looking for a quick answer on this one since I want to get the motor off the boat today.

I have a lifting eye for my 1992 75 horse outboard merc. I need to to remove the nut so I can thread in the lifting eye. But the nut wont turn.

I am using a strap and wrench to secure the flywheel and my buddy is cranking on the nut.

Is there another trick to get this free? all of the vids, and posts just skip over the nut like it should be easy and focus on the problem of pulling the fly wheel which I dont need to do.

Thanks in advance!

I usually use an impact wrench to REMOVE the flywheel nut, never to install.

No impact wrench availible. Is the nut that big of a fight usually? We tried a dewalt drill with a wrench attachement and the drill started smoking.

Thanks!

Re: Flywheel nut stuck!

Do not underestimate the value of an impact wrench. I was reading the other day and a rather small impact wrench would whallop 700 ft-lbs of torque on an unsuspecting nut. 700 ft-lbs is equivalent to 700 lbs of torque on the end of a 1 foot wrench, or 1 lb of torque on the end of a 700 foot handle....rediculous but that is the math....feet of distance x lbs of torque.

Harbor freight sells them for less than $100 if you buy the house brand in 1/2", the red and black cased ones are the best for the money. Once you have one you will wonder how you did without it....if you do any mechanicing. I have used mine on the farm for over 10 years and no problems; paid about $60 for it back then....just oil with impact tool oil frequently.

You absolutely cannot beat them for stubborn nuts.

How do you think people get nuts off farm equipment that has been sitting out in the weather for 50 years?

Re: Flywheel nut stuck!

Great info! Thanks!

Turns out the solution was even simpler than anticipated. The lifting eye is hollow leaving room for it to thread over the flywheel nut. Engine is off!
