today i started my 110 evi 1989 and of course found out that i have to replace the thermostats.
I had it winterised and started it up witout a problem.
After the alarm went of shut the engine down and let it cool till the alarm stopped.
then i checked the compression and were 110psi on all 4. so i dont worry about cylinder ore piston damage.
bud i wiggeld with the flywheel en i found some play up and down. very little bud i can hear it to.
is this going to get worse ? ore is some play acceptable?
This motor was rebuild by a omc certified Mechanic in 2000.
well i have to replace the thermostates and waterpump but the motor started right.
and i hope is fine.

thanks, reeldutch

Re: flywheel play

hello
no play is allowed in the up and down. means the bottom ball bearing is failing. did the rebuild include a new one? and some techs like to beat them on. just because a tech is certified does not mean he is competent:) . I have found this out in the past 30 years of working in and around shops.
good luck and keep posting
but if you run it till it fails it will take out the crank and rods usually. some lateral is kinda normal. the upper bearing is a double roller and they get a tad loose and rattle for years.

Re: flywheel play

reeldutch, One of the hardest things in boat motors is ........ is this normal.Truth is we don't try to wiggle a flywheel unless we have a reason to.I have no idea what a normal flywheel feels like.I do know what a bad one feels like, because I went looking for a noise,or other problem.
Generally speaking I have seen Force motors with so much vertical play, they made me nervous. They are still running.
I've had OMC/BMC's with noise in the upper engine, and found back and forth movement (slight) and replaced the bearing. But I have had a few with slight up/down motion, and never had a problem with it.If you feel it,but can't "see" it,just check now and then.Make sure it doesn't get worse.
Some is normal. Re: flywheel play

Reeldutch: Try to lift sraight up with both hands-or both sides of flywheel with something else like wrench shanks. Play straight vertical is the lower bearing. Lateral play is the top main.
Like Rodbolt says, the failed lower will eventually damage rods, bearings, and pistons. Need help, here, but I think the lower can be changed without removing crank from block. Powerhead has to come off, I think.
A little play in the top main is okay if it's getting oil. Standard clearance is small though, about 0.005" with crank at 1/2 a thousandth undersize. So, you'd hardly see(with naked eye) any play with good, serviceable parts. An indicator will show it.

Re: flywheel play

hello
I think neecapers ment .0005 :)
the tolerence on rollers is tight.
the average human hair is .003. yep I have changed a few without seperating the block halves. its not easy and I replace the retainer plate when done. but it is doable. use a dail indicator on the top of the crank. side to side motion is normal for old jonny/rudes but up and down is not good. if it fails there will be no warning other than wow it just went BLAM and quit.
good luck and keep posting :)

Re: flywheel play

i checked it again and the movement is more sideways maybe i am just paranoid.
but i check everything.
thanks for all your advise.
probebly nothing wrong we will see the comming season.
It is only frustrating if you throw a rod when your 2 miles offshore and the only way home is a 15hp kicker.

reeldutch

Re: flywheel play

hey its even frustrating to toss a rod in the driveway :) . you may be paranoid. sticking cross flow v4 tstats are common. if you have any concerns call the tech that built it and ask him if you could bring it by for a touchy feely.
good luck and keep posting
