Ok....getting ready to pull the flywheel ('85 Mercury 150 Black Max XR2).

First, I had a few questions about the various pieces that came with the puller I purchased.....basically, what are they and what should I use them for.

If someone could identify the parts in the photo from left to right I would really appreciate it.

I have a pretty good idea of how the first part works , but wasn't sure about the other five. Also, anyone know what size the flywheel nut is on this thing (I need to remove that first, right)??

Any other info. you have for a first time puller would be appreciated.

Thanks!!!

Apart from the puller assembly, the next two are crankshaft end cap protectors. Don't know for the washers...

The puller goes together as shown below. The bearing makes it easiere to turn.

This is from your picture so you know the names of each part as I used them.

Re: Flywheel Puller Question (Photo Attached)

Wow, looks like you got a full kit. I have the actual Merc puller and have pulled a stator or two. The cup shaped pieces go inside the puller on the bolt so you don't ding the threads on the crank. Pick the one that fits best. The washers are a mystery to meet but I suspect they are so you don't bottom out the puller against the flywheel.

Now heres the trick... Unless this is a true Mercury puller lucky, the bolt will be coarse thread and that's not going to provide you with the needed leverage to pull the flywheel.

You'll put a wrench on the puller and a socket with a breaker bar on the puller bolt and hold against yourself but when it feels like you can't go any further without something breaking, stop. Take a ball peen hammer and tap around the outside of the puller. Never hit the flywheel with anything just tap on the puller. It won't take long and you'll notice that the stator has come loose. Remove the puller and you're home free!

Hope that helps.

P.S. You can't tap with a 3lb sledge hammer... No, that's not fair.

Re: Flywheel Puller Question (Photo Attached)

Great explanation Don... Mine has a hardened steel fine thread bolt with a tapered end that self centers on the crank. I've used the home made and after market types but never had the bearing and washers. I suspect this is to counter the use of a course thread bolt.

Thanks!!

I got it off....came off pretty easy once I got the flywheel nut off (It was 15/16"....I thought it might be metric :D)

Now...onto the stator and trigger
