Re: Flywheel Removal (No Holes)

Curious problem have you removed the nut? In the picture it looks like a ring maybe covering up the holes. Have you thought of drilling a tapping holes yourself? I think it would be pretty easy to do just have to us the harmonic balancer for a hole patter centred over the nut. The tap I used to clean up the thread on my Johnson was a 5/16-24 would have to just be careful of the clearance under the flywheel. This is just a thought or a last resort if the outside dia puller doesn't just pop it off with a little tension and a couple taps on the center bolt.

There are 3 holes under the stainless ring, to be used with a puller. You can't see that until you remove the flywheel nut and the ring.

You'll need (3) 1/4"-20 Grade 8 bolts of suitable length, along with your harmonic balancer puller. Probably some washers for the bolt heads as well, depending on how big the slots are on your puller.

Don't use Grade 5 or less bolts, 'cause they'll either strip or break. Grade 8 will handle the strain with no problem.

Be sure to clean and degrease both flywheel and crankshaft tapers before reinstalling the flywheel. You must use a torque wrench to ensure the flywheel nut is properly tightened to the correct torque value, else it'll likely strip the flywheel key.

+1. Only use GRADE 8 bolts and washers. Here's a pic of how you want to pull it. Don't be surprised if it's stubborn, or makes a loud BANG when it comes free.

Re: Flywheel Removal (No Holes)

I haven't had a chance to look at it again. I'm wanting to do both of my motors at the same time so I'll get to it this weekend. Appreciate all the responses.
