Have a 1956 johnson 10 hp. how do I remove flywheel to get to the coils & points? Do I need a puller or can I use the old lawn mower trick with a pry bar and wood block with a hammer? don't want to bend or wreck anything!

Re: Flywheel removal?

Good advice being given. My puller looks identical, probably same brand, bought it over 30 years ago.

Do use a torque wrench!! You CANNOT do it right by "feel". Likely you'll need two sizes in your home outboard shop, 3/8" drive and 1/2" drive. The size of the drive is not as important as the range of torques provided. Sometimes the smaller one is referred to as an "inch pound wrench" and the larger as a "foot pound wrench". For around $80, Craftsman will sell you a nice "click type" wrench, either size. http://www.craftsman.com/shc/s/search_10155_12602?vName=Tools+%26+Equipment&cName=Hand+Tools&keyword=torque+wrench&sLevel=1&sLevel=0. I've been managing for many years with a pair of "beam type" wrenches, MUCH less expensive. Read the instructions carefully on whatever you buy, borrow or rent.

One additional question: I've always struggled to find a way to hold the flywheel while loosening or tightening the nut (100 ft-lbs torque spec on my 115). I hate to risk damaging the flywheel with an improper holder. What do you guys use?

Re: Flywheel removal?

For a flywheel holder, in auto engine work they have a flywheel wrench that engage's the the teeth on the ring gear of the flywheel. It is used when the engine has to be rolled over by hand. There are a number of maker's of this wrench. An auto store should find it in there catalog, if not in stock. It make's me cringe when somebody talk's about jamming the flywheel with a punch, or screw driver. For small engine's, a strap wrench is used, I got mine from the OMC special tool's catalog. To make this wrench really work, I replaced the strap with a length of serpentine belt as used in auto's. The local garage gave me a used one for the asking.

If you have ratchet straps sometimes a 3/8 drive ratchet will fit into the buckle on the side. It's what I use for a strap wrench.
