I have a 1968 Evinrude 9.9 sportwin and I'm having trouble getting the flywheel off. I'm using a flywheel (strap) holder, a 24" breaker bar (on my puller) with PB Blaster and it's not budging. Can I use heat or will that destroy the flywheel? I doubt this flywheel has ever been taken off.

Re: Flywheel removal

Try rapping the center of the puller with a hammer. Don't go crazy, just a sharp rap. You can also (carefully!) tap it upwards from the underside of the flywheel.

I have tried that (using a mallet). I have even tried a thin pry bar under the flywheel using the t-stat housing for a fulcrum point (I know, I know, bad thing to do but it's really jammed on there). I have a puller on it right now and I can't turn it any tighter than it is (must have several hundred pounds of pressure on it). Gettin' scary.

Try a 50/50 mix of acetone and transmission fluid instead of the pb blaster. heat will likely get the crankshaft seal . Have you tried an impact wrench on the puller nut? good luck

Thanks Will, I'll try the acetone/transmission fluid and (maybe a bigger hammer)!

Try not to rush it. With the acetone/transmission fluid soak it could still take a few days. Every now and then pay it a visit, tighten the nut and whack the center bolt with the hammer and then walk away. It sounds like your near to breaking something with that much torque. It will come but on it's time, not yours. Best of luck. Rick.

Thanks Rick, I'll take your advice. Don't want to break anything, it's not mine.

I forgot to say. A little heat with a propane torch will only help. As was said before too much could cause seal problems but a little will help unstick it. When you reassemble, the tapered connection should be clean and use no compounds, just he key way and proper torque. Rick.

Re: Flywheel removal

Impact wrench was the only thing that got the flywheel off of my 1966 33HP. I too was originally going the breaker bar, PB Blaster, strap wrench, torch and prayer route.

Success!!! Patients was the key. I used acetone mixed with automatic transmission fluid for a penetrating oil, left the puller on for 2 days, gave it a slap with a hammer, and it popped loose! Thanks for all the tips! Cheers!

Great news for sure. So many strip threads or pry so hard the break the flywheel of the part they are prying from. Rick.
