no it wont hurt, it will help if its starting to fall apart, you dont want that foam in your carb(s) the foam is for noise reduction.

In fact, the recommendation was to remove a portion of the foam on my 1988 OMC Seadrive.

The engine heat with the foam in-place would cause the ignition module ($$$) to overheat and eventually fail.

On the recommendation of the local OB guru, the foam was removed a few years ago. The failures suddenly halted.

Food for thought..

Ken

Re: foam pad in motor cover

I just replaced mine for the same reason, i tried using the spray foam, but it did not seem work well(hard to get it to stick to the sides). So i ended up using a 1/2 inch thick foam padding type stuff and glued it in. I cut it into 2 pieces(one for the top of the motor cover and one to wrap around the sides) Seems to work really well. Although i am not sure exactly where you can get it, I just had a big roll of it behind the house.

I guess i should also add that it was right after i put that foam padding in that my ignition module did fail. Could be from that.

Re: foam pad in motor cover

Hi august: I removed all the foam from my Force 50hp shortly after I got the boat as it was disintegrating all over the place. Took a lot of gasoline and foul language but the inside of my engine cowl is nice and clean and I don't worry about crud being sucked into the engine. Thoughts about noise: Most of the noise from a 2-stroke motor comes from the intake (carburetor) if the exhaust is properly muffled. In an outboard, the below-the-water outlet takes care of this, so if you want to quiet the motor you have to install a muffling device of some kind on the carburetor. My old Evinrude Fisherman 5.5hp has something that looks like twin small mufflers which mount over the carb intake. The motor is quiet as a whisper. My Force is noisy because there is an open carb with only a thin fiberglas cowl covering it. If someone could design a silencer for this carb, you might get a quieter motor. However I can live with the noise because I know the motor is breathing freely. Just an idea.
