Foam Under Seats

I took advantage of the nice weather yesterday and removed the seats/frames from my '61 Starcraft Runabout. Theres an aluminum "box" attached to the underside of the wooden seat bottom that contains some foam - about 2'x4'x3" in dimension.

I want to put a floor in the boat, and this "box 'o foam" will definately interfere.

Is this absolutely necessary to have under the seats? In the event the boat begins to sink, I wouldn't think the foam would have any value as it's so small.

What do ya's think?
Thanks

Re: Foam Under Seats

I've done it on a smaller aluminum fishing boat. However, my crew and myself always wear life jackets...no exceptions! I also use common sense and avoid bad days to be out on the water. You take your chances and live with the consequences. I figure if I ever got to that stage of the game(sinking)I'd have other bigger worries to deal with. If you fish large lakes/reservoirs or out in the ocean, I would not do it.

Rick K, Are you going to have any space under the floor that you plan to put in. If so, fill those cavities with foam. Just a thought.....SS

Re: Foam Under Seats

Thanks for the replys. I guess I'm still in the "thinking" stage on this one. This boat will most likely never leave the canal and *maybe* will venture out on the niagara river on a calm day, so it won't be subject to much rocking around.

I can design somthing so that I can keep the original frame/foam, it would probably save me a ton of work anyhow...

Thanks
Rick K
