Foam Under The Deck Necessary?

I'm rebuilding a 1989 Sea Ray 210 BR, and there was TONS of foam in there. Does anyone know if that is structural or for flotation purposes?

I don't want to put foam back in it, and there is going to be much more wood for structure than before. But if it needs it for flotation because maybe the hull doesn't displace enough? then I will put it back.

Any knowledge on this would be great!

Thanks, Matt

Re: Foam Under The Deck Necessary?

I think a 21' is just outside the legal level flotation threshhold, but the idea of adding "much more wood" (much more weight), and reducing flotation might be a bad idea.

You may have to increase your deck core thickness for support too, which is more weight.

Reengineering a boat is a tricky subject. IMO

I agree with this^^^ and Sea Ray's did use the foam in some hulls as a structural component. Not sure about yours. You Might contact them to confirm.
