Could the engine have been fogged? It may have been oiled up for storage. Has it done it since then?

The only other oil is in your lower unit where the gears are. Is it the same color as your gear oil?

voodoo i did have the muffs on and it was peeing fine.
Cobra it was a light brown foam but when I put the motor in the garage this morning there was black oil spots right around the prop.
I'm thinking maybe water got into the gear oil?
I just thought if anybody has had this happen I might be able to fix it myself if not its to the boat motor shop and there goes my tax return money

rb59 I have been chasing the same problem with my 1992 9.9 Evinrude. Ended up replacing all the seals and gaskets in the powerhead while I was in the process of converting the motor to an electric start. Nothing showed any signs of failure as they were removed one by one. After the rebuild I hooked the motor up to muffs and ran it. Same problem as before, foamy grey oily discharge from the exhaust. Have since run the motor on the boat and no discharge. I think that running the motor on muffs may not create enough back pressure in the system. Don't really know for sure. Many member here have told me that this is normal. We'll see how it goes this summer. Good luck.

Running om muffs will not create enough load on motor to make it burn all the oil in gas, it should be that way. Worse when you start a motor that has been overoiled for keeping in storage. There's always dripping black unburned 2 stroke oil from exhaust, dont worry.
