I removed the lower unit of my 1974 Evinrude 115 to have the prop shaft seal replaced while I replaced the floor in my old Deck boat. I'm almost done the floor, but guy doing the lower unit hasn't finished it yet. I don' think I'll use the boat anymore this year, so I was planning on buttoning it up for the winter and replacing the lower unit come spring.

How do I fog the motor with no lowerunit/waterpump?

Can I just spray the fogging oil down the throat of the carbs while I crank the motor, or should I remove the plugs, spray the fogging oil in the holes, turn the motor over by hand an couple times and replace the plugs?

Is that all I need to do to the outboard for the winter? I flush it with fresh water after each use, and the lower end will have fresh oil and a new waterpump when I get it back.

-Aaron

Re: Fogging Question

You can clamp a water hose directly to the copper tube running up to the powerhead inside the midsection, from the waterpump, and run it that way.

Thats a good idea! I think I might have two tubes, I know there were two tubes on the top of the waterpump. Which tube do I use?

Re: Fogging Question

Go ahead and just run it without water. You're good for a minute and that's plenty of time to get it running and fogged. The main reason you can't start an outboard for a brief time without water is because of the rubber water pump impeller on the gearcase which is off. Or just squirt some oil in the plug holes. That won't winterize the crankshaft, but the cylinders are the most important. There's probably residual on the crank anyhow. Drain the carbs, too.
