My boat is only 14' and I live on the South East coast in England next to the English Channel. There are no lakes or decent rivers in the neighbourhood, so the open sea is what I have. Of course I only go out in dead calm wheather, but although I have both VHF and the Search and Rescue number on my mobile phone speed-dial, I feel uneasy not to have a plan B if my 70HP Rude decides to have an unscheduled break.

So I have been looking at this folding 3HP Rude on Ebay for a kicker. It comes in it´s own case, all nice and neat and I have the perfect storage area for it in the bow. I would have a kicker bracket on the transom and then just mount it on that when and if needed, as I think its just too much for my little boat to have a kicker on the back permanently.

I have done search on here, and see that you mostly think they are "neat, desirable and collectable", etc, etc, but that´s not my objective, as I need a practical motor that will get me home when needed the most! So my question is - are they good, reliable little motors - of course given that it´s in good shape and properly maintained, etc. Are there any special issues with the "folding bit" that I need to be aware of?

The Model no is 3632E, year is 1966. The guy says it runs well and in great shape and only used to go to church on Sundays (they all do). He says compression is 65 psi and I have no idea if that is good or bad on these motors. I also don´t know what a going rate is for these - I understand they are quite rare - at the moment it stands at $300 but who knows where it will end up - any ideas of a fair value? Thanks guys.

OK fair enough - but in my little boat, space and weight is at premium, so when I saw this, I thought that may be a good solution. I may be able to make storage accommodation for a conventional kicker in the bow, so what would you suggest? It must be reliable, small, light and inexpensive. Unfortunately, usually these requirements don´t go together... :-(

Well I don't completely agree with Mike. There are 14' boats and there are other 14' boats. If you are primarily powered with a 70, and not grossly overpowered you have a big 14' boat.

Three HP will move any of them, but (here I agree with Mike) not fast enough to be useful in escaping foul weather, for example.

I think I would look for a JohnnyRude 6-8hp for an emergency backup.

To give you an idea I had a 4hp evinrude on my 16 ft bowrider. It went about 3mph top speed.

I have a non-folding lightwin on a 10' boat, and sometimes it is a little gutless, but on a 14 I don't think it could push it more than 5-6mph. In addition, the Folding version had a problem with the lower unit bracket breaking. I think a 6-10hp would meet your needs.

OK guys - thanks for saving me from a near-disaster, as I almost bought the thing...
So I will look for a 6-8HP Jhonnyrude then.

They are great motors, but not for what you want to do! The prop is at an angle to help get the nose of a small boat down. 14'boat is a bit big for it.
