Yes, Snailman, even though I never heard that term before, W.A.W.A. still lives on! It is amazing how somethings that could be so simply done are made into maddening beauracry. My favorite acronym from there is that we live on GMT - "Ghana Maybe Time." That really helps W.A.W.A. live on!

Ah yes... Some things never change!

I was in Kaduna, Nigeria (south of Kano and the Sahara) in '70 - '71 right after the Biafran war. Very scary place back then. Nigeria's biggest sorce of $$ back then was peanuts. Since then they've discovered oil and the army officers still drive around in Mercedes Benz' while the villagers dig in the bush for food.

Nigeria used to be an English Colony. That ended in the '60's but they continued to drive on the left until '71 when they decided they would make a complete break from everything Brittish and begin driving on the RIGHT!

Beginning at 0600 on Easter Morning everyone was to DRIVE ON THE RIGHT. Well... It was a very dangerous place for a couple of months to say the least.

Good luck on your next trip. Wonderful people the West Africans. I don't know that I'd trust the governments any farther than I could throw them. ;)

Re: For Snailman

You are right, they are wonderful people! The friendliest are in Ghana! They will be starving, but will not eat the last food in the house - that is reserved for guests!

It is a shame how much power corrupts them and the huge contrast from the very rich and the very poor.
