Well OMC, I have 2 Subarus with over 200K on the clocks, have always tried to change at 3K.
The one has had only Delo diesel oil for the last 50K and it is just about as good as it was new, engine wise that is and it's a '91 model.

Them 2 get 100 mile a day put on them.

I had an '88 Dodge minivan

Dad bought at 80k miles, had normal oil, every 3k miles.

Valve Seals changed at 80k miles (was smoking)

I started driving it around 130k miles

At 170k Miles, it started smoking again, needed valve seals again, but just kept putting in oil.

The More oil it consumed, the less often I would change it.

Finally, once it hit about 200k Miles, I Changed the filter at 5k, and the oil at 10k, I was adding 1 quart per tank of gas.

I drove this over 225k Miles until the tranny finally died, but the engine was still running strong.

I bought a 1990 chev pu new and put 160k hard miles on it thru 1999. I used Valvoline 10w30 every 3k. Engine still ran like new when I traded it in and never burned a drop. I would have kept it, but I needed a sexy divorce truck that year. :D

Even though Im obviously a synthetic freak, I wouldnt actually recommend it unless you just want to extend your drain intervals. You can go upwards of 10,000 miles with a group IV synthetic and put as many miles as you want to keep the vehicle. Actually, there have been cases of people never changing the oil and just adding it with a filter change one time a year and having vehicles go 3-4-500,000 miles. (I dont recommend this though).

A good diesel oil in the correct weight for your vehicle will ensure a clean long lasting engine with changes in the 5,000 mile range.

Dello 400 15/40 in all vehicles, 7of them, I have 205000 on farm truck 84 chevy 4x4 it uses a quart to 600mi. the other 3 cars and pickups are low mileage ,under 40000, change oil ever 3000 mi.
tractors oil change every 100 hrs, 4440 JD has 7700hrs on it and still wont use a qt. between oil changes, I did put inserts and mains in the tractor, last year, but it was pure preventave Maintance. 3600 ford tractor uses a little oil,but I didnt buy it new so I dont know its history. I would not change oil viscositys on any high hr. motor you are asking for broke ring troubles.

Ford P100 Pick Up 2.0ltr petrol
375k miles, Oil & Filter every 3mths regardless of miles, use cheap universal motor oil.
I've had the valve stem seals replaced 3 times, 1 gearbox, 3 clutches and a second hand rear axel.
It passed its MOT test last week, needed a new steering rack.
I think it will rust out before the engine dies.

I use a larger filter that the required one and go the full 10,000, but it would be a good Idea to change it if using the stock one half way through and adding enough oil to fill it up. Dont use Fram filters for extended drains. I like Wix or Purolater Pure One.

Longest I ever ran a vehicle was a 1990 Chevy S-10 Blazer 4X4 V6. Ran it to 198,000 and the tranny exploded. It was going to cost more to fix it than it was worth. Engine still ran great though. It was a great truck. :( Dino oil in it from the start, but every 3,000 miles like clockwork. I should have fixed it anyway, beats a new truck payment. Oh wait.. New Truck :D :D

Re: ??? for those that run your vehicles until death.

Had a '68 Mercedes 220D that I bought with 180K and sold with 315K. Changed dino oil at 3,000.

New valve guides at around 250K.

Bought my '98 ML320 new and traded it at 127,000. Used Mobil 1, changed it and the filter when the computer said it needed it, typically 10,000 to 15,000 miles. Didn't burn a drop when I traded it.

The '99 ML430 now has about 84,000 on the same regimen as the ML320. Burns none.

CAVEAT: The MLs computer monitors the oil condition (electrical conductivity) as well as keeping records of mileage, speed, oil temp, etc. Mercedes REQUIRES 100% synthetic and recommends Mobil 1.

DO NOT take my experience as a recommendation, though Mobil will tell you that you can run 10-15,000 miles on a change and filter. There are too many variables to consider. My son's city driven, short trip ML asked for changes in as little as 5,000 miles.

My last pickup sold at 350k and the one I have now with 310k were changed maybe at 6k intervals. On the previous F250, an '81 I used whatever house brand of 10-40 was available. On the '90 F250 I now drive I use Delo 15-40 and for the last 5 years change at 10k intervals. If that doesn't enlighten you to the "anality" of only using the "best", then I don't know. I've had no internal enging problems, nor oil related situations, other than oil leaks. They build motors well these days. ;)

Things work a lot better for me now, must be better built nowdays ;) when I was younger and had a heavy foot things didnt last as well. I have slowed down a might. When I was younger the state was always threating to take my liscense to drive, too many speeding tickets. lately I dont seem to be in much of a hurry, I have had one ticket in the last 22yrs.

The company I work for runs our Astro vans to 250k, with oil changes at 4k. They then give the lucky driver the opportunity to buy it for $5. I have heard of them still running with over 300k on them with the same service schedule.

Well, I had a 1989 Honda Accord, a couple years back.
It had 300,000kms on it. I only paid $100 for it.
I never changed the oil, but once.
I drove it until 500,000kms without a problem.
I ended up loosing 2nd, 4th and 5th gear on Christmas Day, after leaving the in-laws.
So I drove home(200kms), on the side of the highway, in either 1st or 3rd gear, the entire way.
It took me over 4 hours to get home, but I made it.
That was the last trip that car ever took.
