My force 120 1990 turns over but won't start. and as far as my troubleshoot goes i know that:

0. Starter works.
1. Sparkplugs do spark.
2. Fuel is present in the carbs.
3. Good compression
4. Choke works.
5. No gear selected.

On the main connectionblock on the engine I have not connected the wire named "stop 2" or the ground (last connection).

Edit: The trim is not connected either.

What type of battery do I need? I'm trying to start it in my garage while feeding it water. I'm using jumper cables from my car and despite reving the car the outboard do not turn over all that fast.

Thankful of any advice.

Jim,
Sweden.

Jumping the motor, your not getting a good enough connection. The jumper cables, the wire is probably too small to carry the load.
Any auto starting battery will work.It needs to be at least 450cca.
Cranking too slow won't allow it to start. You need a good turn for it to start.
What is the compression?
Test for TDC,the flywheel key might have sheared.

Thank you for the reply. I know the jumper clamps could be better did not know it was that important :) I will try to find better cables!

I have not measured the compression but turning it by hand gives lots of resistance and without the plugs no unwanted resistance can be noticed. Will follow your additional advice if better cables/connection wont make it start!

Thanks,
Jim

Fuel maybe present in the carbs but if the air-fuel mixture is shut or not opened properly the engine will no start either. Adjust the air-fuel mixture screw set to one turn out from seat-in position. Check the link & synch sticky post for proper adjustment. As for battery, the larger the better, depending how deep your pocket is. I use the ones from Costco which are starting/deep cycle type with at least 800 CCA.

I got rid of the jumper cables and borrowed the battery and cables form the old mans pro mod car :D
Started without a fuzz. Thanks! :)

Have you tried starting it in neutral warm up position? Take the throttle out of gear then push it forward. I am having the same problem and this seems to have corrected it.
