I'm trying to figure out what is causing the bad compression in the third cylinder. I just popped the head cover off and see the gasket is in pretty bad shape. I'd love it if it were just the gasket. But, notice there is a big divot in the piston. I'm trying to figure out how far I need to take this rebuild. The cylinder walls all appear to look okay to my untrained eye. What would be the best course of action here? Do i need to fully tear it down to do all the rings, piston? Could I get away with just a gasket? What are your thoughts on the condition of things?

obvious bad head gasket, need to see a pic of the cylinder wall, looks as though the piston may have burnt to the top ring, if so, it's a tear down. If cylinder looks good may just need a honing and new piston/rings for that cylinder. If it was mine I would re-ring the other two pistons while I'm in there.

I just went and checked things out some more. You can feel a slight roughness at the very bottom of the cylinder where the abraided color change is. I also noticed a similar chunk in the bottom cylinder.
