Force 120 fouling plugs all the sudden?

more info I took my boat out on the ocean this weekend and headed towards the islands. Everything was running fine until about 17 miles out when it started sputtering. I was running at 4000 RPM's all the way out and the temp was very cool. I would give it a little more gas and it would take off again just fine. Not sure what the deal was but at times it sounded like it was going to die and then it would just take off again. It would happen every 10 minutes or so then it would work fine again. I usually get gas at a regular gas station but this time I filled up at the fuel dock. Maybe some bad gas? I also noticed alot of smoke from the motor this last trip, more than usual and it smelled very rich. I think I mixed it a little bit rich? Or could it be something else?
OK I did some investigating... I pulled all 4 plugs and did a compression test. All 4 cylinders measured 129 - 131 pounds.

What got me is the condition of the plugs. Remember I said I was smoking alot from time to time like maybe a rich mixture? Well all the plugs were covered it what looked to be like a black tar, maybe burn oil gunk? I wiped them all off and ran the motor for 10 minutes and pulled them again. I did notice some smoke again. The plugs started to get this wet black liquid on then. To me, it appears to be oil? I have attached a picture of the plug after it was wiped off, then ran for 10 minutes. If in fact it is my mixture that is causing this, how can I rectify the problem? I have about a half tank of gas in the boat right now. Would I add more gas and mix very lean?

I never had a problem in the past except for this last trip.

Thanks in advance for your help,
Joey

The output of your stator could be getting weak.

Not a strong enough spark.

TMD

Just a thought here,,but I know some marina's sell gas already pre mixed with oil,,could they of give you this gas by chance!!!

Ditto.
Get a small portable tank and mix at 50:1.
Test run and see how it does.
If this clears the problem, then I would pump out the gas from the first tank and dispose of it.

TMD,

How can you test a Stator to see if it is working properly?

To test it properly you will need a DVA testor. This will measure the output voltage.

TMD

TMD, what should the output voltage be? Is there a similar value for most outboards? I have a Chrysler 70 model 707HF that I read 60 volts ac at high rpm.
Thanks

Your stator works different than the previous posters.

Your stator is for charging the battery as your ignition requires the battery for life. While the above mentioned stators are to supply the current directly for ign.

As long as your stator output is above 13volts while operating..it should be fine.

TMD

Well I can tell you that I am running at 13 volts at 2000 rpms. This was tested off the battery, not the stator. Would I be safe to say Im charging just fine, therefore the stator is working?

OK here is an update. I ran the motor with a fresh seperate gallon of gas with the correct mix. At 3 or 4 thousand rpm's it started sputtering again. I changed the spark plugs with new ones and it acted the same, still sputtering. What do I check next? Coils? Stator? I'm lost. Please help.

Squeeze the primerbulb...see if the fuel pump is failing.

TMD

Nope, bulb is tight. I just replaced it a few months ago when I did the impeller.

I was reading in a manual I have about testing continuity between leads coming off the plug that I believe goes to the stator. It has like 8 holes on the plug. It mentioned something if the stator is still connected to the boat, then to test the continuity between each lead off the plug and ground. About 3 or 4 of these had some continuity between ground, the rest didn't. Am I testing this right? Does that mean my stator is bad?

Whats weird is the motor is very responsive. No hesitation. It just starts to misfire at higher RPM's. Think we have a bad stator here? What else should I check?

Also how do I test the stator?

I replied to your email.

Thanks for your help...
Joey

Yes it could be the stator, i had this intermittent problem for about 6 months and tried everything under the sun, finally took it to a Force outboard mechanic and it was definately the stator. Thing is they are not cheap.
